How to Tell Genuine Leather from Synthetic, and Keep It Safe in the UAE Heat
Many bags sold as leather in the region are PU or bonded leather, and the difference only shows when the surface starts to peel. This guide covers the quick tests that tell genuine leather from synthetic, why one peels and the other does not, how to clean stains, and how to look after real leather through a UAE summer.
How can you tell genuine leather from synthetic leather?
You can tell genuine leather from synthetic by five checks: a natural, earthy smell rather than plastic; irregular pores and creases rather than a repeating pattern; fibrous rough edges or burnished edges rather than a smooth plastic layer; a surface that warms in your hand; and slow absorption of a tiny drop of water, which synthetic PU leather simply repels.
- Smell. Genuine leather smells warm and natural. A chemical or plastic smell points to PU or vinyl.
- Surface. Real hide shows irregular pores and creases. A perfectly uniform pattern is usually printed.
- Edges. A cut edge of real leather shows fibres, or is burnished smooth. Synthetic shows a fabric backing under a plastic layer.
- Touch. Genuine leather warms to your hand and wrinkles softly when pressed. Synthetic stays cool and springs back flat.
- Water. On a hidden spot, real leather slowly absorbs a tiny drop of water. PU leather lets it bead and roll off.
Why does synthetic leather peel but genuine leather does not?
Synthetic leather peels because it is a thin polyurethane or vinyl coating bonded to fabric, and heat, sweat and UV break that bond, often within two or three years. Genuine full-grain leather is one continuous material, the hide itself, so there is no coating to separate; it creases and develops a patina instead of flaking.
Coated split leather, sold as “genuine leather”, can also crack at the surface because it carries a finish layer. The grades are explained in leather grades explained.
How do you care for a leather bag in the UAE heat?
Care for a leather bag in the UAE heat by never leaving it in a parked car, where cabin temperatures far exceed the outside air during summer days above 40°C. Keep it out of direct sun, wipe off sand and dust with a dry soft cloth, and condition it every two to three months, because constant air-conditioning dries leather out.

How do you clean a stain from genuine leather?
Clean a stain from genuine leather by blotting it immediately with a dry, absorbent cloth, never rubbing. For water-based marks, wipe gently with a barely damp cloth and let the leather dry at room temperature. For oil, dust the spot with cornflour, leave it for several hours, then brush it off. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first.
Do you pay customs duty on a leather bag shipped to the UAE?
The UAE charges 5% VAT on imported goods and 5% customs duty on consignments valued above AED 1,000, under the GCC Common Customs Law and the UAE VAT law. Couriers usually collect these before delivery. Nothing is added at checkout at Tuscany Bags; the VAT and any duty are collected by the courier.

Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to tell real leather from fake?
The easiest way to tell real leather from fake is to look at the edge and smell the bag. Genuine leather shows fibres or a burnished edge and has a natural, earthy smell; synthetic PU leather shows a fabric backing under a plastic layer and smells of chemicals. A repeating surface pattern also suggests synthetic.
Why is my leather bag peeling?
A leather bag that peels is usually synthetic PU leather or coated split leather, where a surface layer is bonded to a backing and separates with heat, sweat and UV. Genuine full-grain leather is one solid material and does not peel; it creases and darkens into a patina with age.
Is it safe to leave a leather bag in the car in Dubai?
No. Leaving a leather bag in a parked car in Dubai in summer exposes it to cabin temperatures far above the outdoor air, which already exceeds 40°C. The heat dries the leather, sets creases and can soften the adhesives in linings and edges. Carry the bag with you instead.
How often should I condition a leather bag in the UAE?
Condition a leather bag in the UAE every two to three months if you use it daily, because constant air-conditioning and heat draw the natural oils out of leather. Use a small amount of conditioner on a soft cloth, let it absorb, and buff off any excess.
Is “genuine leather” the same as full-grain leather?
No. “Genuine leather” is real leather, but it is usually a lower split grade with a coated surface. Full-grain leather is the top layer of the hide with its natural grain intact, the strongest grade and the only one that develops a true patina. Check labels for “full-grain”.
Do I pay customs on an order from Tuscany Bags?

The UAE collects 5% VAT at the border, and 5% customs duty on consignments valued above AED 1,000, under the GCC Common Customs Law; the courier collects these before delivery.
